Invisalign® clear aligners make it possible for teens and adults with mild to moderate orthodontic concerns to straighten their teeth without bulky brackets and wires, often in less time than traditional braces.
And although they are made from soft, pliable plastic that fits snugly over your teeth, sometimes the trays can be a little uncomfortable when you switch to a new set every one to two weeks.
Managing Invisalign Discomfort
When you switch to a new aligner tray, any soreness usually subsides within about 48 hours.
Here’s what you can do to make the transition as comfortable as possible:
- Switch to a new tray before you go to bed.
- Place an ice pack on your face to temporarily numb your mouth.
- Try to eat mostly soft foods, such as yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, or eggs.
- Check your trays for any sharp edges that could cause discomfort.
- Place orthodontic wax on the area that’s causing the problem.
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers as soon as you put the new tray in your mouth.
- Call our office if the discomfort doesn’t go away.
