Wisdom Teeth: Signs They Need to Come Out

Wisdom teeth are late bloomers and come in years after your adult teeth, usually in the late teens or during early adulthood. They are located at the back of the mouth, typically one on each arch, and can erupt without incident.

These teeth are not useful and don’t complement your smile or chewing function, so if they are problematic, extraction is the best course.

Signs You Need Wisdom Tooth Extraction

  • Pain or Discomfort: If you experience pain at the back of the mouth or in the jaw, it may indicate an infection in your wisdom teeth, which should be removed.
  • Swelling or Partial Eruption: If you notice a piece of the tooth or a tear in the gum at the back of the mouth, it may mean the wisdom tooth is impacted and requires extraction.
  • Encroachment: Wisdom teeth can push on necessary teeth, causing pain and shifting.

It’s important to remember that partial eruptions can lead to infection. So, even if the partial eruption is not painful, it’s essential to see your Long Beach dentist for guidance.

About Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Extractions may be surgical or straightforward, depending on the position of your tooth and where the roots are set in connection with neighboring teeth. For you, the type of extraction isn’t essential because we numb the treatment area in either case.

You can also talk to the dentist about our sedation dentistry options if you’re feeling nervous.

After your wisdom tooth extraction, we provide comprehensive aftercare instructions to promote healing and keep you comfortable during the days following your procedure (or procedures). Additionally, we are always here if you have questions or concerns.
